I'm new to vetts, I've always wanted one since i was 10 and now here I am 11 years later and finally got one. Problem is sometimes the shifter seems like it gets jammed while trying to get into or out of reverse. I thought i had it in reverse but each time a let the clutch out and gave it some gas it would just bog down. Moved it around a little bit and into 1st, pulled the car forward just a bit and tried again. This time i could not get it into reverse, some more moving the shifter and playing with the lockout and finally got it. Is this a transmission problem or just linkage? How do i take care of this?
Sounds like it's being left in one of the forward gears when you put it in neutral to get it over to reverse. The shifter rods may just need adjusting, shifter rod bushings may be missing or worn out or the shifter may be worn out.
I would think most auto parts stores would have them... got O'reilly's there? Should be around 13 bucks for a nylon kit. I looked at Zip and Willcox, but didn't see just a linkage kit.

Another thing to look for is whether or not the linkage has the correct retainers. Sometimes people (Bubba) put cotter pins in as retainers but that allows a lot of slop in the linkage. The correct retainer is an "e" clip. It applies pressure against the shift lever when installed properly to keep the linkage held firmly in place.
I'll check with the local parts stores. No o'reily's here, although the ads are tv all the time...wierd. If it does have cotter pins instead of retainers, would the parts store like napa be able to get the correct ones?

They most likely have them in stock. Very common retainer for shifters. Both Hurst and GM shifters use them.
