I had to loosen the oil pan on my '69 350 to remove the timing chain cover and I need to change the gaskets, but the oil pan is blocked by the anti roll bar and power steering rods. When I loosened the oil pan the rear oil seal fell inside. Can anyone tell me the best way to remove the oil pan?
First disconnect the battery. Now, Unbolt the idler link from the frame on the right side. This will allow the steering stuff to hang down. remove the starter. Drain oil from oilpan.
Now with a little fenangling you should be able to work the pan out. you may have to rotate the crank a few degrees by hand in order for the pan to clear some of the counterweights

I dropped the pan easily on my 69 without doing anything but dropping the steering link for pan clearance. In my case, I used a pickle fork to seperate and drop the rod on the passenger side for clearance. Use a Fel Pro one piece pan gasket with a little silicone sealer in the corners and you won't have any leaks. Remove any debris in the pan bottom and clean well before installation.
Just replaced by oil pan gasket and used a one piece Fel-Pro. I had the starter off for something else; disconnect steering from frame on right, and change oil filter at sametime. Everyone above gave you excellent advice.
Thanks to all who advised me how to remove the oil pan from my '69 350 last week. It was indeed as AZ Motorhead said - remove two nuts and one bolt from the right hand side of the engine bay and the idler arm will drop down enough to remove the oil pan (sump to us in the UK!) with no trouble. I didn't even have to remove the starter or oil filter. That's it painted and fitted with new gaskets, and hopefully it'll be oil tight.
