The time has come to replace rubber molding around doors.
I ordered correct molding and forgot to order the "best" adhesive..
Which adhesive is the easiest and strongest?
As long as I'm asking, What would be the best way to remove the cruddy old molding and prepare surface for new molding
I can only answer part of your question. On my 77 I used the 3M super weatherstrip adhesive that I purchased from my local parts store. The number on the box is #08008 and it is black. It also comes in the yellow which was the factory color. Just follow the directions and it will not come off. In my case i stripped my doors so I dont know how you can remove the old seal.
3M makes a spray weatherstip adhesive remover that works pretty well. I peeled off the old weatherstrip with the help of a razor blade scraper when needed and then used the 3M adhesive remover and rags to clean off the old adhesive residue.
You should be able to get the adhesive remover at your local auto parts, probably located right next to the 3M weatherstrip adhesive.
Black or yellow adhesive works the same, just get the color that was used originally if you want the factory look. If memory serves, yellow adhesive was used around the doors on mine, and black was used on the T-Top weatherstrips.
Like any repair, don't rush it, do a good prep and follow the instructions on the adhesive box or tube. Yours will probably look better than original when you are done. The factory had adhesive smeared all over the place on my original weatherstripping.
