Default Parking brake shoe install

Hey guys,

is it possible to install all the parking brake hardware (shoes, adjusters ect) into the rear brake assembly without having to disassemble the trailing arm spindles?

TIA, Ed

Yes it is possible to do this but it’s real hard, but it’s not easy either.

One pin between the backing plate shield and the spindle support is better off not changed too. You’ll have to bend the shield if you want to remove this pin and I’m sure you will figure out which one it is when you do the job.

Aside from this, it can be done!

Default Suggest you do a search for parking brakes.

Suggest you do a search for parking brakes. There are some posts/photos on here somewhere as to how to do this. Also the key for me to sucessfully do this on my 76 was to compress the spring and retainer with small nylon string (some use dental floss), install and then cut and remove the string to allow the proper position. Requires much patience and a couple of pairs of needle nose pliers plus I acquired some new vocabulary words! One side was easier and more open, the closed side is tough but doable. And, as usual, once I did right side, the left side went a lot faster!

It can be done, just start out in a good frame of mind and have patience because when you're done you wont have either one!

As stated above leaving the one pin in place and compressing the springs and retainers with nylon string is the key.

I used the dental floss trick but went one step further. I took a long piece of floss and put a loop into the end of it. The loop then goes over the hold down pin, the spring and retainer go down the string right to the pin.

An additional excellent trick is to silicone the pins in a slightly outward position.

I did it, twice. No big deal, just need a lot of patience with the dang springs and retainers.

Default Dental floss, and time

I did it and it took 4 hours + for the first one. Then it was "easy". Use dental floss to compress the springs, hold in place and burn it off. Get some long tweezers, picks etc. A few beers and some time. Go for it.

By the way I have now done a number of them!

I did mine, and they still don't really work.
