Default Need Tranny removal proceedure help

Hi all;
I have a 71 454 M22 4spd. I am trying to remove the transmission and am wondering if I can remove it without the Bell Housing. It seems to not want to come off with the Bell Housing attached. The drivers side upper B.H. bolt hole hits the firewall and it will go no further. I am wondering if the input shaft is too long to remove only the trans from the housing. It would seem that if I could, then the B.H. would come off easier. Any ideas ?

Yes it will come out without the bellhousing. You have to rotate the trans a little and it will clear. Not much room but it can be done.

Can you raise the front of the engine from under the balancer to tilt the back down enough to give more clearance? watch the dist cap/firewall, on other cars its close, dont know about vettes, not got my engine in yet.

The common procedure is to remove the tranny without the bellhousing. Do you have a LS6 car?

just did it last week. It will come out, leave the bell housing on, remove the front drive shaft bolts, push the trans yoke forward, drop the drive shaft down and then pull the yoke out, watch out for fluid, drain first and then tape the end of the trans to avoid the trans dope in the hair. You do not need to remove the entire drive shaft!!, leave the rear attached. I was also able to leave the exhaust in tact, the last time we pulled the trans, we removed the front right pipe, but found out this time we did not have to. You will need to jack up the motor a little bit to get the front of the trans to drop down. You must also rotate it to the passenger side to clear.Removing the drain plug helps, but is not needed
