My wife's 82 has an extremely high idle (2k) when she starts it up. After warming up for a minute or two, the idle does not go down. In gear while stopped, the idle is fine. After driving around town a bit, placing transmission in park, idle is fine. What could be causing the excessive high idle during first start? Thanks!

Probably a bad coolant Temp Sensor. Its at the front of the engine just below where the thermostat housing is. Easy and cheap to replace.Make sure the rad is full too.
I will check the temp sensor and coolant level! However, the water temp sensor on gauge reads in the normal range.
Quick tap on accelator does not make idle go down
Thanks!
The CTS and temp sensor for the gauge are different sensors. The CTS communicates with the ECM (computer). The temperature sensor is on the side of the block and communicates with the gauge.
The coolant level is important in the 82 because if its low the water does not touch the tip of the CTS sensor. So the sensor is just reading air in there at the beginning. Once the car warms and the thermostat opens water rushes by the CTS and a reading is taken.
If you have been under the hood lately also make sure you didn't knock a vac hose of somewhere.
