Default l-88 hood question

I am considering putting an l-88 hood with the cold air box on my 71. How exactly do you get a good seal on the air filter when it lays inside the hood? I have never seen this setup up close, so maybe I am missing something. Thank you.

The lower part of the air filter assembly stays on the carb. It has a seal on it that seals with the hood when the hood is closed. The filter is in the hood.

I have the L-88 hood on my 72, I currently use the foam filter in the hood. I would like to upgrade to a better filter element. Have others done this and what have they used?

proper L88 air intake setup above.

And the air cleaner is located in a moulding in the bonnet as shown below.

Thanks for the help. I knew the base stayed on the carb, I was wondering what seals the filter to the hood. What keeps dirt from going over the top of the filter?

The filter sits in the sealed air chamber section shown in the second photo.
It's not clear in the photo, but the air filter is sealed up against the underside of the hood as well as the recessed circular base of the air chamber.
It is sealed so that air can only enter the carb through the filter element when the bonnet is shut.

I have a 3" K&N filter in my L-88 hood. I used the original L-88 style foam filter cut down to about 1" thick to seal the areas where the K&N was a little loose. In this pic, you can see the squished down portion of the original foam filter holding the K&N in:

Very sweet setup. How many thousand tries did it take to line everything up correctly? What was the secret?
