Where s a good place to get my L-88 Hood Painted to match? Any personal experiences?
I'm having my hood painted to match right now by Reed at East Coast auto body in Manassas. I should get it today or tomorrow, so I'll let you know how it turns out. They computer scanned the paint to match it, and he's going to double check the match in the car when I pick it up. They specialize in Vette's and fiberglass. I haven't seen the hood since I dropped it of, so I can't comment on the quality of the work they did to mine. The work that was in their shop when I was there looked very nice.
Did he computer scan directly on the car or did you have to supply him with a small sample?
How much $$$
How long did you have to wait?
Thanks for the scoop Steve
It was 400, but he's doing a little bit of body work on it too. Just paint would probably run you around 300. He scanned directly on the car. I drove it there without the hood and had my wife follow me with the hood in the back of the 4Runner. I just left the hood there. This was last Thursday. He was supposed to have it done by yesterday, so I'm going to call him today and find out what's going on. In any case, he's going to visually inspect it on the car and make sure it matches before he turns it over. if it doesn't, he's going to make some adjustments to the paint mixture and shoot it again.
I dropped the car off Saturday morning and should get it back this Saturday.
He said that my hood was in pretty good shape but that all hoods need work. My corners sit a little higher than the fenders. He said that he would "break" the corners off and lower about 3/8". It was also a little wavy where the fiberglass was bonded to the cross section. He will also try to even up the gaps but said if I want the gaps a perfect 1/8" that I would be looking at about $700. I told him that I only wanted the hood to compliment the rest of the car. Anyway he qouted me $375-400 on the phone without the extra work on the corners. I told him to take it up to $500 and see what he could do.
He had a Yellow Z06 in there that was tore up. I asked what happened and he said to make a long story short....the car belonged to a 18 year old.
Did you see the Red Z06 in there? Holy cow. That thing needs a new frame. When you go back to look at your hood in the second part of the shop, look at this car when you pass by it. It's insane. The two rear frame rails are bent in like an accordion.
Do you have the address and phone # of this shop? I want to put it in my notes... (My vette has one of those paint coats that looks great from at LEAST 15 feet. :)) I was unable to find it in a 30 second check w/ the yellow pages.
I didn't see the Red one. I only say the yellow Z06 and the black one. It looks like he only takes in so many cars so that he can store them indoors.

He qouted me a price of ~$3500 for repaint of entire car with no body work. ~$6-7 to redo all seams and make all gaps 1/8". He said quality would be a nice driver.
Hey Rob don't know any painters in that area. But I am about to move to Fairfax, Virginia. How far away is that from you ? I could use all the local shop information you have. Thanks.

We who live here dont know a lot of good shops yet either, but we're still working on it. :D
Welcome to the neighborhood and be sure to give us a heads up when you arrive. We'll have a get together!

It's about 20-25 minutes from Fairfax, depending where you are. It's not a bad drive, you just go south on 28 and turn left :).
We'll definitely all have to get together after you arrive, or even before too.
I won't know a sole when I arrive next month so it would be great to meet some forum members. I would really appreciate the welcome and intro to VA. Thanks guys. First round is on me.

Ok then, Does Hard Times in Herndon sound good to everyone? We can shoot pool, down a few and have some really good chili.
Would love to meet more C3'ers... Unfortunately, I am currently in Fireschool as a volunteer FF. It takes up any free time I have outside of work. Hopefully, the date and time will work out...
BTW, I do know a cool engine guy in Manassas. He is Bryan of Bryan Dobyns Motorsports. Those are the guys that put the new engine in my vette. They do a GREAT job. A little expensive but worth it... The guy does a lot of race work too so timing is always interesting.
Let me know if you want more info...

P.S. For Steve Straus: The wifes bodywork is GREAT!! She just has this crazy notion that things like carpet and house repairs are more important then my vette... :jester

Scuba picks the date and time.
I've been lurking in C3 since my wife saw one she thought she wanted.
Scuba, etc. in the Northern VA area there are a bunch of us that met on the Fall Skyline Cruise and have been getting together about once a month for dinner. We are also putting together a Dyno Day. Check out the Southeast events section. Look for posts started by Bluewasp and *89X2*
beer at hard times sounds good. I called Reed at East Coast around noon today. They were getting ready to pull the hood out of the paint booth and see if it matches the car. He said I might have it by Friday. Can't wait.
