I need to replace my idle stop solenoid on my 71 roadster. All the major suppliers I have checked with say the part is discontinued. I ordered one from NAPA, but it was not same size as original and electrical connection was different. Any ideas on who might have these?

Re: Need Help Locating Idle Stop Solenoid Supplier (John's Shark)
John-
Dr. Rebuild and Paragon both list these in their catalogs, but say "call for price" - translation: EXPENSIVE! I've also seen them on ebay from time to time, but I don't know what they're selling for. On my car, I left the solenoid in place for the original look, but bypassed it so it's non-functional (I think their function was only emissions-related). Are you sure you really want to replace yours?

I need to replace my idle stop solenoid on my 71 roadster.
I have an extra, if you can't find one. It's still in the old rounded box, although I did mount it to test. It's the one that has the spade lug sticking out the side. Send me an e-mail if interested and I'll send you a pic.
Re: Need Help Locating Idle Stop Solenoid Supplier (paul79)
Paul, Tex,
I checked the site Paul gave. Appears to be the replacement type I have now that's not a good match. Tex, I thought the purpose of the solenoid was to increase idle speed on a/c cars, not polution related. I will check the price at Paragon and let you know .

Re: Need Help Locating Idle Stop Solenoid Supplier (John's Shark)
That may be a secondary function, but my car has one and I don't have A/C. It is part of the TCS system (transmission controlled spark???). I think it somehow controls spark advance based on gear selection - I'm sure some other, more knowledgeable members can provide the complete answer.
Re: Need Help Locating Idle Stop Solenoid Supplier (Tex71BB)
The idle stop solenoid bumps up the idle when the AC is turned on, due to the extra "drag" of the AC on the motor. Some non AC automatic cars also have it...usually solid lifter cars. Sorry can't be of more help. Chuck
Re: Need Help Locating Idle Stop Solenoid Supplier (Chuck Gongloff)
Chuck, I think your description of its function is correct. I checked with Paragon. They want $275 for an NOS one. Maybe if I had a NCRS top flight car I could go with it. But that is wayyyyyyyyy more than I want to pay. They also have a reproduction for $39 but were unable to show me a picture of it. I am afraid I will get one like I have right now that is too far off of the original. Still searching
;)
Re: Need Help Locating Idle Stop Solenoid Supplier (John's Shark)
Check with Lars.
I needed one and Lars gave me a part# of solenoid and bracket from I think http://www.amesperformance.com.
Total price $37+shipping.
Don't know if it's correct #'s wise.
I wound up getting one free from Jvette73.
Thanks again jvette73(John).

I rebuilt my idle solenoid. I just uncrimped the end plate and cleaned it up inside. Be careful with the tiny wire going from the end plate to the winding. It now works great. Craig :seeya
Re: Need Help Locating Idle Stop Solenoid Supplier (John's Shark)
John,
I have a used solenoid from a 71 in my Q-jet parts box. It in the same condition as it came off a carb. It has the two vacuum ports on the rear and the white caution lable with red letters attached to the side of the solenoid [ Idont recall what it says]. I am really not interested in getting rid of it,but if you are desprate e-mail me. 71 is the only year that used this solenoid, in 72 chev removed the vacuum lines from the rear and put the vacuum advance control on the passenger side of the intake and called it a tcs valve[trans controled spark]. The combined unit on the 71 was called cec unit [combined emission control]. I know that some year Corvettes had a increase idle control when the AC was on. I cant remember what year or years [old bad memeory]. I do know that it was not many and my 72 does not have a raised idle with my AC. Maybe someone has a better memory. The vacuum advance control is one of the most failed item in the NCRS operations test on the 70-72 models. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the tips guys. I will check with the mentioned suppliers and let you know what I find. Funny how one little part on a 71 can be so scarce
Re: Need Help Locating Idle Stop Solenoid Supplier (John's Shark)
My idle stop on my 71BB was taken off this week by my mechanic. I was told that it did not work and he replaced it with the $39.00 version..Now two days later I'm sitting here reading this and feeling like a real schmuck and I'm wondering if he is really gonna cash in on his new found part... BTW he is a vette mechanic... P.S. why isn't this one of those multiple repeat topics I could of read last week????? :mad :mad
Re: Need Help Locating Idle Stop Solenoid Supplier (71DropTop)
Doc rebuild has those solenoids NOS and only $45. The bracket is NOS also $22.50 The jamb nut $5.
You could buy 2 and sell one to the other dealers and more than break even, fill up the Vette with gas, take the wife out to dinner and get a case of suds!
