I don't know anything about clutches. Never put one in, never saw one!!! I just received a new clutch from Fort Wayne Clutch and I need to be certain that I have the right pressure plate and a good throwout bearing.
So is the following normal:
When I put both pressure plates on a flat surface, the fingers of the new one are about a inch higher than the old one! Does this just mean that the old one was pretty bad?
The throw out bearing id is not symetrical with the od. So it wobbles when you spin it.
I know you guys are going to get a kick out of the simplicity of these questions but as long as I get answers I am glad to entertain!!!
Yes the pressure plate fingers can be at a different height. Might just be different clutch manufacter or the old one is just worn.
The throwout bearing, yes that is normal. The center can move around slightly. No need to worry.
To be clear, the id is not loose, I would expect a little play. But it is not on the same centerline as the od. so when you spin it it moves back and forth. When I look at it from the back side it is clearly not on the same centerline by about 1/8 inch.
I put a new AC Delco clutch in my rolling chassis and found that the clutch fork was pushed up against the bell housing with no free play adj.
I removed the clutch and compared finger height with old plate and found new plate fingers were 1/8 inch higher. This was enough of a difference to throw linkage geometry off so free play adjustment was not possible. I would have returned the clutch but I had it balanced. I had to buy an after market adjustable ball stud, harden the ball and adjust it so there was enough free play to keep the throwout bearing off the fingers. I just can't conceive there being an inch of finger height difference in your clutches. I would recommend your new clutch have the exact same finger height as old one to avoid any problems.
Good luck
