Default solid lifter valve lash settings

I started and ran my 350 motor Tuesday to breakin the new solid lifter cam. Ran the motor for just over 30 minutes between 2000 and 2500 RPM's. Used Joe Gibbs BR oil / Primed the oil pump / filled float bowl manually before starting.

The motor fired right a way and ran great. Was able to get to 2000 RPM right a way.

All went well when finished so far knock on wood! , the sound at idle was very nice at the exhaust.

I had the lash set at +.002 for a cold start per instrunctions.

int .022 cold Hot is .020

ex. .027 cold Hot is .025

I have not had a chance yet to set them at normal operating temp.

I like the sould of the chatter from solid lifters. Comp Cams said I can adjust as much as + or - .004 from the cam card setting.

Question is

If I set at .022 on Intake HOT and .027 Exhaust HOT

I feel I will get a more noticable chatter , thats ok with me.

But what performance gains or losses will this cause if any?

Are there any reasons to not set them a little losser just to get a little more chatter??

Thanks
David

you do not want too much lash or chatter......004 is not enough to matter.......too much lash is extra hard wear on the valve train......

Increasing lash reduces lift & therefore reduces perf.

Thanks to both of you

I think the advise is sound and makes sense to me.

I will stick with the cam card recomendations

I built a 355 solid lift engine and when to go + or - on the valve adjustment it does not mean reduced performance. The best I can remember tight gives you my bottom end and lose give you more top end.

The other way around- tight for higher HP. Loose would be expected to reduce max. HP. This could increase low rpm torque so depending on the setup, it could result in better perf. at lower rpms.

Thnaks for the correction I knew it was a difference been many years since I had that solid lift set up. It did make a difference.

Are you running aluminum heads? If yes you went in the wrong direction and are running way to much lash.

You may like the sound of a lot of lash, but you are beating the crap out of your valve train.

Based on actual experience, I respectfully disagree. Running valves a tad looser than specs definitely increases performance.
