I finished my T56 install. It is a good fit and really changed the car's performance. I changed the rear end to 3;73S. I still need to get the speedo hooked up. Is everyone using the cable x or digital speedos? It is about time to put her back on the road. I spent a year of research to determine which way to go on the upgrade, there is a lot of information out there. If you want to do this upgrade spend the time to see what works best for you. I was able to keep my manual clutch and the actual time was minimal. I would recommend this to anyone with mechanical skills and a welder. I have had this car for over 13 years and enjoy the work in the winter time and the summers on the road.
I installed the Viper GM T56 with the mechanical speedo tail housing, so do not need any cable X to convert.
I changed from 3.70 to 4.11 rear to be able to get the 6th gear being a 0.50 : 1 , to work reasonably on the highway.
My L71 likes to have 2000 RPM minimum to have the mechanical advance on the ignition working.
It is fully in at 2500-2800 RPM.
I also removed the welded crossmember and installed a auto removable crossmember a couple of inches further back to sit the T56 right onto it. Looks kind of original and I do not need to expect any complains from the biyearly governmental technical car inspectors.

I am mechanically inclined and plan to do this swap soon, but I am not a transmission expert... how do you go about using the manual clutch and avoid using the clutch master cylinder issues?
I put in a T56 from an 06 GTO. The 6th gear ratio is a .58 which is a little better with the 3.70 gears I have in mine. 5th is more useable around town and 6th is great for the highway. I went the other way with the clutch and glad I did. I used the stock LS1 type throwout bearing and did my own hydraulic clutch. I used a Tilton master cylinder. It has a larger bore and does not have the restrictor valve that most stock systems have. Therefore the clutch action is extremly fast, no delays. It is very smooth and I got rid of all the linkage. It is tight in the tunnel but it will fit. I did have to modify the reverse lockout solenoid some but it works now. It is actuated by the brake pedal. I changed my gauges so my speedo output is electronic. The T56 is a great transmission.
I converted from TH350 auto to T56 out of a 2000 camaro when I did my LS1 conversion, and the T56 is my favorite mod. I also went hydraulic clutch and digital speedo route. It is great cruising on the freeway at 80mph and revs are < 2000! Not to mention the fun of stick again.
Wow-I failed to note how old the original post is. Any updates after ~ 20 months with your T56?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
Why are you against the hydraulic clutch? Lots of people run them with no problems. I have a hydro- clutch T56 in my other car and I love it.
I'm not aginst them I was just looking for the easiest way to do this... if I find more info about "how to" I might go for it. Thanks for the info
Im not sure what size the T56 master cylinder is supposed to be when used with the stock hydraulic throwout bearing... So call around and see if the size of this master will work (11/16" bore). Very simple (and cheap!) to install: http://vettemod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3947
Obviously you would skip the part about installing a slave cylinder

Mine is a little bigger bore at 7/8. This makes for a very fast acting TO bearing but the travel is very short. Some guys like a longer travel so the clutch engagement is a little smoother. I went for a faster shift with the quick clutch engage/disengage. The larger the bore the less travel and faster it will react, the smaller the bore the longer pedal travel and the slower it will react. There is no right or wrong one just whatever you want. Be careful to not overstroke the pedal on the LS style TO bearing. It WILL blow out fluid and leak. . You have to creep up on the adjustment.
