Default 78 side pipes

How hard would it be to put side pipes on my 78? Is that even a good idea?

I put Hookers on mine but it violates all smog laws. Looks and sounds way cool though.

oh yeah it's a good idea. i just put hookers on my 80 with open side-pipes. 9 out of 10 people smile and give me a thumbs up, that 1 out of 10 person lol; i don't understand how they get so angry, i'll just put it that way. (just store your smog equipment away and bolt it back on when you need it, thats what i'm doing).

This is an easy mod with several different approaches. Hooker header sidepipes in different finishes, Patriot sidepipes hooked to your current exhaust or fiberglass sidepipe cover replicas with exhaust you construct.
I purchase my sidpipe cover replicas from ebay and used hedman side exhaust headers. Spent approx. 400. Good luck w/your selection process.

I have headers connected to Patriot Side pipes. They look great, a little loud though. I do like the looks of Patriots better then Hookers..sorry people, just my opinion!

just a note, it's easy as long as you don't break your dipstick tube and have to spend all week searching for someone that carries a tube a for an 80 vette, and then find out it dosn't work, so you have to find another one, and then.... you get the point lol.

(this isn't really that bad unless your vette is your only car and your a duma$$ like me lol)

could you post a pic of your installation.... was thinking about buying the patriot classics with shields instead of the laker style to install on my 74

A note of caution may be in order here. Note that on some Hooker sidepipes you see heat guards. They perform a valuable function. Very uncomfortable burns can be the result of contact for the unwary.

My wife got a really nasty burn on them, which pushed me to get the heat shields.

I have ceramic coated chrome hooker headers and side pipes on my 80 and they did get rusty pretty quick. I actually damaged one of the header tubes when i ran over something 10 years ago. I don't really remember what I ran over. I pulled the car out of storage last year and one of the items on my "fix it" list is the exhaust. Many people prefer the hooker over the patriot exhausts because they have 4 inlets not just one. But, I've been told that under the car exhaust would be better for my mildly modified sbc 350 because it creates more back pressure and more HP. This leads me to believe that the car would perform better with the patriot exhaust if you have a 350.

I'm looking at replacing the Hookers with Patriots for the above reason and they cost a lot less than hookers.

Plus, I can use standard headers with the patriots. If I need to change them in the future (because of local emissions laws), That's one less item to replace.

I put the Patriot side pipes on my 77 and I have been pleased for the last 3 years. The only problem I had in the install were the hanging brackets.I remade them and was able to pull them up about 1 1/2 inches.Best of luck.
