I just got back from LA last night after having number 3 rebuilt diff installed. It was under warranty but still had to shell out 6 bills. It still has the same noise as the last two did. Intermittant light knocking at low speed-15 to 20 mph coasting in gear. Old stub axles were chewed up on ends with no taper left and center pin was chewed up a bit. I was told the bolts comming off the ends of the spring were too long. They put shorter ones in and new stub axles and it still makes noise. Not very loud but at this point I have given up and will just turn up the radio. I was just wondering if any of you out there that have an 80-82 with the aluminum housing have had similar noises with yours. Thanks for any input, Jay
The little bit that i drove mine before winter, i did not notice any noise.I did however have the diffy looked at. We put in a new set of posi clutches, and seals. It didnt need bearings or races. Will let you know once i get it back in the car?
My 82 does the exact same thing at about the same mph. I rebuilt my rear with all new bearings and new clutches. Used the old gears as they're in great shape. My stubs were fine and so was the center pin. I rebuilt the rear end because I drain the fluid and had broken clutch retainers coming out, but when I was done the noise is still there. I'm thinking u joints, I know mine are old. How old are your joints?
Sorry to hear about your poblem. The rear diff has always been smooth and quiet in my 80- with about 103K miles on it and frequent driving. Coincidentally, its in the shop today (ProGear in San Diego) for new seals, deeper gears and solid u joints.
