I took my 1972 Corvette 454 out for a cruise, everything was running fine today when I started hearing an intermittent winning noise that appears to be coming from the Water Pump. Close examination of the belts show they definitely need to be replaced.
No leaks, no over heating, but how do you know when or if the water pump is going?
Thanks
Also what is the correct part number on my pump I can only see 8982-1
Since my car was built May 11th / 72 I should look for a pump with a date code of b / c / d April 72

When they get real bad the bearings start to whine and can sometimes screach. Right before they go out they will really let you know. Hopefully you are not to far from the civilized world. They will wobble also if the bearings are on their way out.

They also have a "weep" hole under the impeller. When it starts leaking antifreeze it's time to replace it.
