Default hubcentric vs. non hubcentric

ok here's what I have 1972 coupe and stock C5 thinspoke 17" front wheels and 18" rear wheels the stock tire sizes are as follows:

front 245/45 r17
rear 275/40 r18

I have purchsed some aluminum wheel adaptors that are 2.5" in width. I have already relocated the parking brake bracket on the rear trailing arms.

Question is... should I have gotten hubcentric wheel adaptors or will these be sufficient. Spacing and fittment issues aren't a problem as I have had the wheels on the car for a few months now and they look great. The car will be used as a driver and will probably never be driven above 80 MPH on the highway. I read somewhere that regular spacers that are non-hubcentric will put too much weight on the wheel lug bolts. I just can imagine those breaking and the front fender being ripped off the car as the wheel breaks free...

Is this true and a worry? Should I look for some different adaptors that are hubcentric? Or I am just being paranoid?

thanks in advance!

Did you buy them from VBP?? they ship with their own lug nutz to hold them to the hub/rotor assy.....then the lugs for your wheels will secure to the adaptors....

now if you got them elsewhere, you need consult your vendor...mostly they are hub centric for the adaptors, as I recall...but the wheels are mostly all LUG centric with a tapered lug nut....

I hate mag wheel nutz with the shank on them that is another version of lug centric, but is a PIA to work with because you have to watch the diameter of the lug hole in the wheel, vs the diameter of the shank.....a stupid as hell way to do anything....

Here is a very good thread on the topic with some excellent engineering analysis. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/auto...dt-racing.html
See post #13. Cliffsnotes version...hub centric is not a requirement since the studs will not yield enough for the hub to ever contact the wheel at loads below 15,000 lbs.

well thanks for the post... I guess I shouldnt be worried then. I do think i will go ahead and replace the old wheel studs though, 37 years old and all...
