What would you recommend for a 79? The stock setup with the snorkels, K&N filter and a Performer Air Gap or open element K&N with the Performer RPM Air Gap?

Unless you're going to some sort of open air hood scoop, it seems to me that the OEM system is a safe bet, especially for stock/near stock applications. Many people ditch those snorkels and go to an open element design in an effort to reduce intake restriction. What they overlook is that the engine is now sucking down all of that hot air inside the engine compartment.
All other factors being equal, cooler air = more horsepower
