The top drivers side gas tank is the only place that the production line "had to or must" place the build sheet (tank sticker). Beware that from time-to-time they forgot or didn't place one on top of the tank. Sometimes they even put the wrong sheet on top of the tank, I.E. the sheet that belongs to a different car comming down the production line that day.
Many of the line workers, particularly in St. Louis, placed build sheets in several other places. The production workers did this on their own accord. Popular places were above the steering column next to the interior fire wall, behind the radio, and on occasion underneath the drivers side carpet. There could be other surprise locations too as they saw fit.
On another note - if you ever drop the underside shields and remove the insulation, you should find the job number written in grease pencil on the floorboard toe.
Jeff
where the heck is the build sheet supposed 2 b on a 78 thank u ..and can u order them or did that start in 81
I'm pretty sure its on the fuel tank cover, NOT on the fuel tank itself. So if you decide to drop your tank, don't get all depressed when its not on the tank.
If you cant find the build sheet and want a copy of the invoice. A copy can be bought for $50 (few years ago they were free). It will look like this. Tells you what was ordered on that VIN #:
