What does it take to convert a L36 to a L71/L89? who sells the aluminum heads and the tri-power assemblies? Thanks?

Do you mean L88 when you say L89? In all honesty you probably want to stay away from a tri-power setup and numbers matching aluminum heads. A good intake and 4 barrel carburetor will be much easier to tune and will perform better for what you are going for. As cool as the tri-power setup looks....it's not worth the cost unless you are going for a numbers matching engine or the sheer cool factor.

As for the heads, finding a set of L88 heads will be quite a job and they will run you about $2000...minimum. You would be better off sinking that kind of money in a set of AFR, Edelbrock or Canfield aluminum heads, they will most likely flow better.

So I take it you are building up a big block?

Hi
Don't think it's as easy as just finding L71 or L89 heads.
Isnt' the L36 a oval port block ?
The L71 , L89 and L88 are square port blocks.
To convert to them, you need to change the block, intake and carbs at least.
Very expensive to gain what ?

It is the cylinder heads that are cast as oval or rectangular port and not the block. But yes, you will need to match a rectangular port intake with rectangular port cylinder heads.

ok thanks for the info!
I am thinking of engine building. If i can only get my hands on a block....
I should ask my dad, if i can't have a car, can I just have an engine? (he owes me years of Christmas+Birthday present :jester )
And one more thing, I do mean L89 heads

The main differences are the components in the engine. The higher HP components are stronger. IE -- 4-bolt main block for the stronger motor, where as the L-36 is a 2-bolt. Changing heads/intake just takes $$. Matching the other parts in terms of strength is the most important.
