17x9 wheel with 4" backspace fits perfectly on the rear with no changes to the trailing arm. Clearance is fine with the sway bar too. Everything that could possibly make contact with the tire/wheel is INSIDE the wheel diameter.
I fitted 16" TT's and they look real good. They have that "almost" stock look and keep a similiar stance on the car. However and this is a BIG HOWEVER ... I can't find the size of tire that I really need/want. I run a 235/50 up front and a 255/50 out back. What I really need to maintain the height is a 255/55 ... well the only tire in that size is a SUV tire
I have a set of Dunlops but could not get the better D8000's up front. The 8000's out back seem to get a bit greasy and slippery too.. But they are far better than that BGR radial junk that I ran on my 15's!
Any tire suggestions are welcome. I might upgrade to 17"s just for better rubber! But IMHO the 16"s just look right.
Funny I used to run ex-race D208 race comp tires on my Kawasaki ZRX 1100 that had been hot rodded and when too hot the Dunlops got greasy ... same as the car ... I now run another tire on my bikes!
I am going through a similar analysis. I went to a car show and saw two 1970 vettes with 16" TTII's. They looked great. I checked the Tire Rack site and found a complete package with 255/50/16 BFG g-sports was $1,400. As stated by other CF members, that was the only option other than Hoosier racing tires or SUV tires. The diameter for that combo, 26", is the same as the more popular combo: 255/45/17 and 17x8 TTII's. A typical 17" package from Tire Rack with better rubber is around $2,100. I prefer the look of the 15" or 16" wheel, but how long will tires of any performance capability be available.
I have 16" TT 2's and when I bought them 5 years ago 16" tire were plentiful but know the most common tire available are 17" and 16" are hard to find.
I"m already picking up the scarcity of 17" tires.....getting stupid,...
I went '92 vette rims some 15 years ago, it's still cheeper than going with larger rims, tire prices ZOOM for anything larger, but what with availability....I dunno...
This is why I went with 17x8.5 and 18x9.5 tires on my '79. It is rediculiously hard to find good tires for a decent price on the smaller sizes. I think I run 255/45 on front and 275/40 on back and the car looks sweet imo.
