Default K&N Air filters

Do the K&N air filters really give you a little horsepower boost? They claim at least 5 horsepower gain...............

On my expedition I felt the gain. also HWY mileage went from 13.5 to 16 MPG, but part of that was a dirty filter. I think that will be the most noticable gain MPG.

There may be an old post or two on this.
I put one on mine and didn't notice any difference, but I'm glad I did it.
It's supposed to flow more air and I guess that's good for the engine whether I can feel it or not.
I thought some have said they don't filter as well, but I'm not sure there was any hard evidence of that.
If I had put it on when I got the car 7 years ago, I guess it would be paid for now

My engine rebuilder who's been in the business for over 25 years doesn't like like K&N filters.
He says more dirt gets in the engine using K&N versus a paper filter.

Oh well I still use K&N's in all my vehicles.

Not sure if I noticed a perf. increase, but it will draw a comment or 2 at the shows everytime......"Excuse me Sir, What kind of filter is that?" Maybe I should sell em one the side..... :jester

I agree with 69er engine mechanic, chevy quit using them years ago, the oil traps the dirt, needed since flow is better because filter microns are bigger thus letting in more dirt and air. Worst off with them if you don't properly and constantly clean and reoil.

I like them and I know other people who like them as well. Yes they do require maitance but what doewn't. Cars/Trucks seem to breath better wth a K & N. Fuel mileage and power increased are not uncommon. My opinion.

It's my understanding that oiled filters filter better once they're a little dirty...that they continue to flow well and filter good due to the oil trapping the dirt.

As far as I know from using mine from the day I bought my Vette...I've never ingested anything horrible. The intake is clean, the carb is clean, and the filter housing is clean. And I drive on the crappy roads of Colorado.

The 3x2's use a foam element (over a screen) stock, so the K&N unit is a big improvement. I also believe the paper elements are better filters, but you do give up some flow (HP). I would use a paper element, if one were available, in mine. To each his own, in my opinion.

I recently put a K&N filter on my '77. It wasn't anything extremely noticeable, but I think its better than the smaller Mr. Gasket filter that was previously on it. I don't know how well they filter compared to paper, but I'm going to keep it and probably get one for my F-150 soon.

Rich. I use the double K&N setup for my crossfire.
I noticed not only a difference in performance, but I think they sound
better when you step on the gas. They also seemed to help gas mileage
as well.

That's exactly what I heard about K&N's.

All filters filter better when dirty. It's when they release that dirt that is an issue. I use a double setup on my 82 crossfire and have one on my 96 as well. Good air flow. If you modify for more air (and who doesn't want more HP), its a good investment. Otherwise, a little pricey.

I have a K&N on my Vette and I have always wondered about its efficiency trapping dirt. Then I checked the Cummins Diesel web page and they say that using a K&N will void their warranty, so I conclude that it must let more dirt through. Not a good thing!

Richard

Someone on the forum mentioned that on some industrial engines they were doing oil analysis & switched to K&N. Some particulates showed up in the oil analysis & they coudn't figure it out. Someone noticed it occured starting w/ the use of K&N & they switched back to reg. filters to fix. Have posted this in C3,4 & Aftermarket before if someone wants to search.

It’s a given that if you flow a greater amount of air with one filter with an equal cross section of another the higher flowing filter is not capable of filtering the same particle micron size. The question is whether or not you care. Personally, I use them on some cars and not on others.
