Steering Gear Bind At Center Position?
I have rebuilt the steering column, replaced the rag joint, and replaced the idler arm and tie rod ends. My next items to tackle are to rebuild the power assist and have Gary rebuild the steering gear. The problem I am chasing is a minor bind in the steering at the center position. It is so minor it is not noticeable on an irregular road. On a straight smooth expressway when applying slight steering changes around the center position there is a noticeable "catch" when passing through the center position. This is also noticeable to a lesser extent when the car is not moving. With the steering column out of the vehicle, I do not notice any binding in the steering column. Do the experts think that this binding is in the steering gear?

I can't think of anything BUT, those gears are ground for a 'high center' and if binding there, they are in trouble...you gotta adjust that top nut, jack up the car, drop the assist ram off the frame bracket....and with engine off, adjust wheels to turn easy through the whole range...with no play in the high center position, straight ahead....if you relax it too much, you lower the car and get a lot of slop in the wheel before the front end reacts...
