Default Shifter boot to large

I have an automatic and wanted a shifter boot installed. I purchased a black shifter boot from Ecklers and when it came in it was 1/4" too big at the base. I also have a silver boot that I purchased about 3 months ago from ZIP...the base is the same size as the black boot..... Is there a trick to installing it? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure about your year but doesn't the flange around the bottom that seems too big tuck up from underneath so it's hidden? Sounds like you're trying to screw through the boot flange into the console opening. Screws go through the console flange onto the boot.

Can you post a picture of your shift plate and the boot?

Do this and I'll see if I can help you.

Oh, Vetteguy75,

This is exactly what I expected to see and it's not the first time I've seen it.

The boot you have was not used for a 1975 with AT. What you show in your top picture is the way it is supposed to look . . . Bootless!

The boots you have are for manual transmission cars and there is no way to make them fit your car.

I know it's suppose to go bootless....I wanted to try something different for my interior and I saw (on the Forum) pictures of an automatic with a boot and it looked like it fit....do they make a boot for the automatic?

You know, I can check to see if the 77-82 boot will fit but I doubt it will. I'm heading out of town until Monday. . . Maybe someone else can tell you for sure before then.

If it fits, I don't know what you would screw it too unless you machined out the area where the slides are or just replaced the plate with a 4 speed one.

Thanks....I'll return this boot to Ecklers. Just let me know if the boot you are speaking of fits and I'll purchase it from you.

There is a vendor who advertises here once in a while who sells custom shift boots. If you can find the name maybe they could help you out. A search on shifter boots may or may not help. Failing that, find someone who knows how to sew and has a good machine and see if they can make one for you. A boot isn't much more than 4 pieces of thin leather sewed together.

Wilcox hit it on the head. You will need to change the trim plate out for one from a 4 speed car.
