Anyone put in some higher flow sidepipes that will fit under the stock 69 covers? Looking for something that will give me a nice sound without the flow restriction.
i've tried a bunch of different combos under my covers. yes three inch pipes will fit, but very tight. the best i have found, and are on my car are from www.allencorvetteexhaustsystems.com they have a 2 1/2 inlet with almost straight through pipes in the stock style muffler. i can see out the other end. they sound exellent. i also got mine without the head pipe. i fabricated my own header to muffler.
I used Hedman HED-68210 side exit headers from Summit. These were about $150. They also have coated ones for more, about $450.
I then bought a stick of 2.5 inch pipe, 2 90 degree bends, 2 turndowns and 2 Cherry Bomb Mufflers. This appears to flow well and does not assault your ears.
I thought I read on this forum that if you wanted more flow and less noise reduction, Cherry Bombs could be turned around backwards. After looking down inside one, I understand how this could be. I installed mine to be quieter.
This system was very inexpensive. Someone could use coated Headers & stainless pipe & mufflers and still be reasonably inexpensive.
This all fit perfectly under the Side Exhaust covers.
Be aware that the Heddman side exhaust headers will not fit an A/C equipped car without modification to the rear tube on the RH side. I have a set that I intend to fix as soon as I pull the heads, and other than that they will work fine, with nice large tubes adequate for a mid performance street engine. These are unequal length!
For a true equal length header, Stahl is the way to go, but they exit further back at an angle and absolutely will not work with A/C. These are big tube race headers.
Schmegeggie, Is your car a big block or small block?
Wrencher says he has an issue with these headers on an A/C car, but doesn't say what motor he has. Maybe he'll come back on and say.
My car is big block with no A/C & no power steering & no issues.
Has anyone installed Jet-Hot coated headers? or better yet bought their 69 replacement side exhaust/headers set-up. Quoted me $1338 shipped to my door. Doesn't sound too bad, but I was hoping not to spend that much.
Schemegeggie,
I would like to do the same job on my 69-427 ( which is an original factory sidepipes car but running now back exit exhausts)
I've seen that SweetThunder sells High flow 2.5" factory side exausts... better then Allens or just the same thing? does someone knows ?
does someone has a pic of a 68-72 Vette with just the side exhausts installed and no covers? I would like to see how it looks ( not enough $$$ now to buy covers too)
So, I've decided on the Hedman 68280 headers w/ the 20110 A/C bracket. $175 plus minor shipping. We're going to get them fitted and in place, then send them off to Jet-Hot for coating. As far as the sidepipes, we're not sure yet. Either going with the Sweet Thunder customs and fab up a connecting pipe or going to fab up something that fits under the existing covers. Any thought's?
