'76 trip odometer
Hans
So, you will benefit from this to some degree, it will be a few weeks before I have this up on the site and ready to go.
You stated that the trip odometer stopped working and will not reset. Have you tried pulling backwards on the reset cable to see if this fixes the problem? We did a speedometer a few months ago for a customer and he was a taller person. After he installed his rebuilt unit his knee hit the odometer reset cable. The cable was defective and pushed upward on the reset mechanism pictured below. When this happens you will put constant force on the trip reset which will basically lock it up.
This scenario will usually eat either the gears shown in the second picture below or it will eat the gear off the end of the trip odometer. It can also cause odometer failure if left un-attended for only a short amount of time.

Now if the trip cable is not releasing and just binding up either from being defective or from being routed wrongly when installed you can usually remove it from the car if you do so quickly and keep from doing further damage.
This is something you should either have repaired now, or disconnect the speedometer cable to avoid even more damage to the speedometer head.
People, please do not attempt to take the trip odometer apart! Even we have problems putting them back together. They odometers and trip odometers contain plastic parts and they like to break when serviced. Below is an exploded view of the contents of the trip and the odometer units.

Hope this helps you,

I dread taking my dash apart (sorry). Something always cracks since its all original and brittle. Several of my illuminations lamps are burnt out so I'll be in that boat with you. Just dont force or rush the process.. Wish I had the tilt/tele option, that would probably be helpfull.I think I'll be putting those SMD bulbs in too. They look like a nice upgrade.
Good luck-
