Default Speedo Gear

What is the correct factory transmission gear (color) for an M20/3.55 gear combo?

TIA,

Mike

no such thing as a correct gear.....it depends on the drive gear in the tranny and it could have come with two different ones...t.here are several ways to calculate your correct speed..then if the speedo is too slow, go down teeth on the driven gear if too fast then go up in teeth...parts books will list the so called correct gear but many times they are in correct......

If you have your original 71 M20, then the driven gear used would have been the 22-tooth Gray

(also called Silver) gear, p/n 3987922.

There were two different drive gears used on 68-70 4-speeds, but 71-up should be only one.

Best to pull the driven gear out that you have now and see what color and tooth count it is,

then you know for sure what drive gear you have.

If you need the 22-tooth, that gear is still available from your dealer for $6.83.

It's the original '70 M20, my speedo is off 10 mph and my rear gear is correct for the car. I was going to check the gear, then the speedo.

Thanks for the info.

68-70 is different than 71-up and could use two different drive gears, so need

to pull your driven gear to determine what drive gear is in there now.

What determined which drive gear? I assume rear gear ratio? I would think the 3.70 and numerically higher rears would get a different gear?

FWIW, speedo reads 10MPH to high at all speeds. Checked with GPS which is dead on in all of my other vehicles.

Thanks,

Mike

Yes, the rear axle ratio normally determined which drive gear would be used. Lower axles usually got the smaller drive gear with the larger driven gears, and higher axle ratios were just the opposite but there were exceptions. The 3.55 is right in the middle and could go either way so need to find out what drive gear is in there now, and your driven gear will tell you that. Going up 2 or 3 teeth should fix you up provided no other problems.

Thanks guys, that's the info I was looking for. It's an L46 with the optional 3.55 rear. I'll post what I find on the driven gear.

Thanks,

Mike
