Power Steering Pump and Bracket Upgrades
Advertised as 1/4" steel, though a little shy of this, it is still a rugged and well engineered piece, with nice welding and a rock solid fit. It is set-up to mount to the two threaded holes on the driverside front of small block, and has an arm that takes support from the front motormount hole to provide a simple, well thoughtout platform for the Saginaw 3 series pump. I couldn't be happier to get rid of the poorly thought out and constructed GM set-up.
Now for my disappointment(although it is good news for 1975 thru 1982 owners). Tuff Stuff makes a couple Corvette specific power steering pumps that are the original Saginaw 3 design, and entirely new manufactured parts, and they are direct replacement for the originals. The pumps come complete, and even have a chrome cap/dipstick. Build quality on these pumps looked to be awesome and for the $119.95 price(#TFF-6178B)my guess is they are a great alternative to a rebuilt. So I figure since I have a cast pulley/keyed shaft pump, No problemo! I ordered a new press on stamped pulley, the new TFF-6178, and I'm in business. To my dismay, the two pulleys have such different offsets, that the new 1975 pump won't work with my pulley set-up.
(Anyone need a new press-on pulley?) I plan to talk to a tech rep tommorrow, to see what the pump pressure on some of the keyed shaft models they offer, is. If I can find the right combo for my 1971 roadster, I will be back with the info for the earlier pulley set-ups.I believe that the Saginaw pumps and boxes work on around 1200 p.s.i. and you should have a look at the Borgeson website as they also offer a range of pumps and brackets for Corvettes and other cars. www.borgeson.com.
I have several of their brackets and pumps and I have to say that they are quality items. Even the brackets to mount Saginaw pumps to Ford engines are works of art, check them out.

Don't want to run my mouth here, but if I am not mistaken, the Corvette pumps are application specific and set-up for Corvette use only, running on a much lesser PSI(900 if my memory serves me). If you decide to give one of the above mentioned pumps a try, you might want to check this out, or you could be setting yourself up for disappointment. If Jim Shea is available, he will know.
Thanks for that caution, but I believe that this is not the case. Let's hope that Borgeson or Jim will chime in and set us both straight.
