It looked black to me, but it could be because it was covered in grease. I feel like the starter should have at least clicked when I turned the key. Im confused with it...

The purple wire could look black so that's OK. Take a look at the 79 wiring diagram (post 21 link), that red wire on the outboard solenoid terminal, is that correct?
Won't turn over- clutch depressed or auto shifter in P or N? PG.
Rig up a test light with a brake light bulb and some wire and alligator clips. Put 1 clip on the purple wire, its the terminal away from the engine and the other clip on ground. Hit the key, no light you got to keep looking. Check the park switch, etc...
When you connected the battery does anything else come alive? Radio? Lights? Brake lights?
Yellowbird - all that is on the ground behind me. I bought the car with all that in the back of the car. But it should still turn over without all that, it would just drain the batt. (I wouldnt keep it on long)
Pete, the way I am reading the diagram is that the purple goes on its own terminal, I am assuming the far right (when looking at it). The Red+White, Red, and POS batt terminal go on a terminal together (assuming the middle one). And nothing goes on the left-most terminal. Is that how you are reading it??
SIXFOOTER - Ill rig up that setup when I work on the car again Tuesday. The only thing is, I have the purple on the terminal closest to the engine right now. When you say park switch, I am assuming you just mean have the transmission in park? Thats my novice side coming out. Not too familiar with a parking switch. And yes, the lights, wipers, blinkers, and dash came alive when the batt was connected.

Yes, that is correct.
The solenoid has 3 terminals-the "S" terminal is closest to the block-the purple (your black) wire goes there.
The BIG terminal gets all the other wires, and the "R" terminal (outboard side) get nothing.
SIXFOTTER is correct, if you connect a test light to the "S" terminal and turn the key to start you should have power there. PG.
Ok, the next time I get to work is tomorrow.
I will get something rigged up so that I can read test and stop guessing.
Y'all assistance is un-parallel. Thank you....
Your Fuel Line is NOT connected to the carb. If your fuel is working and that engine cranks, you are shooting Fuel across the entire top of the engine.
Where is the vacuum line from the Brake Booster going? I have a '71, so it could be different, but mine goes straight to the manifold and doesn't have what looks like a fuel filter inline with the hose.
(I know this doesn't help the cranking, but I thought I'd mention it any ways)
S-Ray....NICE CATCH!! I dont know how I've been missing that. That saved me big, my friend would not appreciate it if I sprayed gas all over the side of his house!! Thanks alot man.
