Default Question on installing a oil pump

I am installing a new Melling oil pump on my 71 350 LT-1 motor

Getting the pick up tuber into the pump was a real task.

It was all I could do to get the tube into the pump with out destroying the raised ring on the tube.

The question I have is on clerance betwee pick up and oil pan

I wa stold to set between 3/8 and 1/2"

I assume that means to measure the absoulute bottom of the pick up and not to the screen??

For me to get 3/8 between the back of the pick up and the pan the screen holder and screen are at a slight incline.

In other words the screen is not parallel to the bottom of the pan.

It is not off by much , but that is what is needed to get the 3/8

Does all of this sound correct?

Thanks
David

as long as the screen opening is not less than 3/8" you will be OK. i would also "tack" weld the pickup to the pump body so it can not move

I would strongly recommend a tack weld as well,I did grenade a motor once because the pick up fell out,its a lesson you don't want to pay for!

The next time you have to do this, put the pick-up tube in the freezer for 1/2 hour and the pump in the oven @ 250 for 15 minutes. They will almost slide together. Welding is just added insurance that it won't come apart. But you see how hard they went together, so it's not necessarry. You clearance is fine.
