Default Any tech articles on pulling engine?

I need to pull the engine on my '68, already. Can I leave the bellhousing and trans in, and just pull the engine? Or is it easier to leave it all attached and pull it all?

I assume the radiator needs to come out.

Any tech articles anywhere on the procedure? Seems straightforward and simple but I'm sure there are some gotchas.

David,
Is it a BB or a SB? When I pulled my big block I only pulled the motor. The rad does need to come out. At least it was easier if the rad is out and you won't damage it either. The rad almost takes longer than the motor. Although now that I've done it a couple of times it is faster each time. The rad is a VERY tight fit and has to come out very straight.

Hope this helps,

shmoky

It's a BB. I searched but hadn't found this link. As I suspected it should be pretty straight-forward. Although I'm not clear as to the advantage/disadvantage of leaving the bellhousing attached or removing it.

I pulled my SB 1-1/2 weeks ago. We removed the rad and shroud and supported the bellhousing and trans. with wood blocks on a rolling dolly, because you need to roll the car back 3-4 inches as you pull the motor out. After we got the motor out(yes, quicker than removing the radiator), we used straps to "sling" hold the transmission so we could move the car around. I'm sanding the firewall, frame and crossmember now as the motor gets rebuilt(stroking it to a 383! Can't wait) so that when it goes back in it will be .....PRETTY!

Granted my car is 10 years newer than yours and it's a SB
but.....

I left everything in. radiator, shroud, bell housing and trans.
took the fan off the water pump and it came right out.

I eventually pulled the radiator to replace it but I had no problems! (and yes the radiator took longer to get out then the motor)

I did the same as shmegeggie and used a ratchet strap to hold the trans up when I wanted to roll the car around or tow it from one of my garages to the other.

pull the engine without the tranny and you can leave the radiator and support in the car....

Remove the following...exhaust manifolds, z bar, motor mounts, disconnect the connections to the alternator, fuel line to carb, water hoses.
Get a leveler move tje engine forward to clear the input shaft then lift straight up...

You will save yourself hours and hours of work if you leave the tranny in place...done this many, many times....

don't forget to support the tranny

Easy. Here's what you need to know- due to the C3 front length, a typical roll around puller is not long enough from the front so the engine is pulled from the side.

If you use a cherry picker...and you will have to remove the front tire...

Or you can hang a come-a-long from your garage beam. Works just as well as a chain hoist.

On the topic...anyone in the Twin Cities area have an engine hoist I could borrow? I've got one, but it's almost not worth the 2+2 hour drive to go get it, and I'm coming up short on Craigslist.

I pulled my engine with no issues leaving the transmission in place. Unbolt the engine from the trans and leave the converter in the transmission.

I never removed the exhaust manifolds, fuel pump, carburetor, motor mounts, or water pump from the motor nor did I remove my radiator or even the shroud. I did remove the power steering pump, crankshaft pulley, distributor, fan clutch & fan, and A/C compressor & lines. I had friends over the night we pulled it.

It went well, with no real hiccups. Except for converting to headers (and thus no manifolds were in place), I installed the new engine in exactly the same way- by myself/with no help.

Big blocks it's easier with the left exhaust manifold removed...
