Default What air conditioning pump should I run?

I want to put A/C back into my vett for the summer... My old 100lb pump most likely works but I want something smaller, lighter and more efficient...., preferably something that will just bolt in, but if not what is available? p:-)

A latter model R4 about 15 lbs. w/ brackets will work.

The Sanden compressor is a popular replacement.
http://www.vintageair.com/ & others have brackets.

I replaced the R4 compressor with a ND 6P (similiar to Sanden 508) which uses less HP & works great. Compressor, custom brackets & hoses to stock A/C system w/ R12. http://ganeys.home.sprynet.com/77ACs.JPG

Thank you.... called and talked to a tech at Vintageair and they stated that there A/C pump units do not produce the proper volume of pump/discharge to work the stock A/C system.

Is it a Sanden 508 that is stock? and what more about the ND 6p?

Thx. p:-)

15 years ago, early on in having my '72, I changed to a '88 vette serp drive and new rad electric fans, not looking back....in Wash Dc area I could not find a a/c shop capable of making hoses, much like exhaust shops there, they just knew nothing....

so moving south to Florida a couple years later, I found shops could actually make what I needed, so off came the junkyard a/c hoses/kludge I made up and on went custom hoses for a hundred bux.....same with the stupid ill fitting walker type exhaust crap I had....

thank GOD for people here that can actually MAKE something and not buy off the shelf crap that don't about 1/2 fit let alone WORK right....

as to model #'s and type compressors, I can't help you '88 vette works fine with '72 vette components and 134 freon...

If you want to keep is as simple as possible and have deep pockets you might consider this replacment compressor from Old Air Products

http://www.pro6ten.com/pro6teninfo.php

Jay

Do you want "correct" or functional? I will assume functional since you now have an "incorrect" A/C compressor but have included links to both.

You may want to consider purchasing the receiver/drier from Old Air Products along with the compressor since they require a new one as a warranty condition on the compressor. They don't say you need to buy one from them, but they do say that you must have proof of purchase of a new one and buying it from them would minimize the likelihood of finger pointing should there be a problem.

Functional:

Correct:

That sounded like you had the previous heavy A6, about 35lbs..

If you have a "1979", you should have the R4.

Evidently he refers to this:
The Corvette & Corvair used a smaller A6 of about 10.8 c.i.,
the R4 is 10.0 c.i.
The Sanden 508 & ND are about 8.5c.i.

It's working fine for me & several others w/ the Sanden.

I see you bought a compressor.

Pauldana,

I suspect that Ganey took a look at your profile information where you have your car listed as a 1979 L-82.

I "assumed" that your A/C compressor was the older A-6 style when you said it weighed 100 lbs. but there is definitely a difference between the A-6 and R-4 compressor which was used in later year GM cars. I don't know the actual date of the switch but it was sometime in the mid 70's.

What year is your car?

Regards,

Jay

Yes.

Note the Corvette & Corvair used a smaller A6 of about 10.8 c.i.

I have a new 508 Sanden and bracket kit for sale first $250 takes it (I came across a Vintage Air "front runner kit" for my Vette so have no use for Sanden pump set-up now.) Email me at zeohsix2002@yahoo.com for more information.

AAAHHH!!!! wrong compressor... will update in a few....

That compressor will not work... now looking at a Sanden 510, which is supposed to be better than a 508... 195$ and $225 polished... still checking if hoses and brackets will be a direct fit... AAAGGHHHH again!

Pauldana,

Sorry to send you down the wrong road.

Somewhere I got it in my head that you had a '72 and that along with your statement about the 100 lb compressor got me "assuming" that you were looking for a drop in replacement for an A-6 compressor.

That all said, I am not aware of any drop in replacements for the R-4 compressor, althought you would think there should be with their reputation for failure.

Regards,

Jay

I have Alan Grove brackets for the Sanden 508 Compressor. He makes them for almost all the suppliers. My hoses were custom made by a local shop.
Interesting that Vintage supplies that setup for their own product but says it will not work on yours.
Works on mine but I'm in the process of going to a new condensor and C4 blower fan. The C4 fan is a big improvement. Now if I can just finish up with the new crossflow condensor.

I switched mine to the sanden 508 using R12 and custom hoses and brackets I made up at work. It works well.

Looks good- and blows cold air. (always a plus!)

Seeing the thing about the Corvair with a/c I was reminded of the Vega. With an automatic trans, uphill, it would downshift when the a/c compressor came on.

HEY IM BACK!!!! thank you everyone!!.. heres what I ended up with, a sanden 510. From what I understand... or been told.. the 508 puts out 8.5 and the 510 puts out 10... yea I had the A4 unit... the Sanden 510 is still about 5 lb lighter and takes about 3-5hp... down from about 10-15 from the A4. ... with the bracket and compressor, polished aluminum ... cost less than 250$.... but now I will have to have the hoses made and then the system charged...

can i charge it my self?...

Sure you can charge it yourself. Do you have a vacuum pump for A/C work and the gauges? If not, then farm it out to a professional.
