Default Steering Box Question

My steering column is not yet attached on this 69 Coupe. If I slide the rag joint on the steering box shaft, how much free play (side to side) is correct? I can grab it ( Rag Joint) with my fingers and twist it at least an inch (left to right and right to left)before any resistance is felt. This seems a bit sloppy. Are there adjustments to take up this slop?

If the gears in the box are centered, it should require about 11-13 inch pounds of torque to move the shaft past the top of center with no play in the box. I suggest pulling the box and rebuilding it or contacting Gary at GTR1999 for a blueprinted box.

I did rebuild the box. How would you tell if the gears are centered? I added a power steering unit to this previous manual steering car, so new components and pitman arm. Am getting prepared to reinstall the steering column now too. How would I contact Gary at GTR1999?

Did you use the shop manual to rebuild it and set the lash and required preload using an inch-pound torque wrench with a dial indicator?

Scott, to be honest, I can't remember..it has been at least a year since that part of the rebuild. I got a rebuild kit from somewhere, took it apart, new bearings and races and seals, and put it back together. Can those adjustments be made now if it were not done back then? Like I said, it is not connected to the column, only the pitman arm.
