Default AR Racing wheel/lugnut question

Hey guys,

I bought a complete rolling chassis for my '69 project - it came with 17in AR Hoopster wheels. They are in the vintage line and do not require spacers. They call for acorn style lugnuts and I am using standard 7/16 x 20 GM studs.

I am getting 6.5 full 360 deg turns to full tight on the AR lugnuts - maybe I am just being paranoid but does this sound sufficient? Last thing I want to do is punt a wheel

TIA, Ed

6-1/2 turns on a 7/16-20 stud will only give you .325" of engagement. You should probably have at least twice that.

ARe you sure about that measurement? Sounds tiny to me. A little over 1/4 inch engagement with over 6 turns?

20 threads per inch = .050" per turn. 6.5 x .050 = .325".

That is .020 below the minimum spec for a 7/16 - 20 nut/bolt.

thats what i was afraid of. I called AR and the guy I spoke with said it should be ok as some people only get 3 or 4 turns

Where did you get the min specs?

looks like a shank style lug nut is the next best option - I really don't want to go to 1/2 in studs.

Anyone with ideas?

Get a standard 7/16-20 lugnut. Put that on and see exactly how much stud is in the nut. If it is below the end of the nut, it's not enough. I've never seen any printed specs on automotive applications (I'll bet they're out there), but in my world (aircraft) if you don't have a minimum of 3 full threads past the nut you need a longer bolt/stud.

thanks for the replies

I finally got someone on the horn at AR who knows their stuff - looks like ET (extended thread) lugnuts are the answer. They are designed for acorn nut style wheels and should provide an extra .20 of thread engagement. I am currently at .40 - this will put me in the .60 range which should be more than enough for 7/16 studs. Good article below:

Thanks, Ed
