Default another speedometer question

I've searched back several pages on speedos, but don't see this exact problem. Sometimes speedo reads correct, sometimes not. Just checked it again last night with a GPS. First 30 miles speedo reads correct 40-70mph. We came back 4 hours later & it's reading from 4-8mph slow, at slower speed is more error, & seems to be a little bouncy. This has been an intermittent problem for couple years now.
New cable, lube the old one, live with it?

'79 w/o cruise, original manual tranny.

Thanks, guys.

New cable rec. Speedo cable lube on the old one may work. Sometimes when the cable gets moved out of the position it has been in a long time, putting it back will fix.

Its a cable issue, and the little square bit that goes into the tranny might be getting worn.

Its a $20 part from say zip or ecklers.

I would replace it and see what happens.

Also I think the gear in the transmission that drives the spedo is plastic and it might also be getting worn.

Its pretty much the same with your tachometer. there is a little square peg that starts getting bouncy and then fails by twisting off.
