Hey guys youve all been a great help so far on a lot of stuff so here is some more, bm super t10 with a hurst comp shifter on it I line everything up on it and install the linkage then try to shift but it seems to only want to go in and out of 3rd and fourth it wont move anything for 1st 2nd rev trans was just rebuilt but it seems as if when i go to change fron 3 4 shift to 1 2 it is stuck the trans is sitting on my bench right now and i wonder if maybe because it is not siiting solid i am try to hold onto and fight it to much. any help would be appreciated.
Not sure how much you know about Hurst shifters but they are spring loaded from the side. To get into first and second you slightly pull left on the handle. To get into reverse you pull hard left. If the trans is moving on you you probably won't be able to get it to go.
Caution, do not use a vise on the mounting ears or you may break them off.
Either bolt it to a spare block or to a transmission stand.
I cannot get the shifter to go into Reverse. The weird thing is it'll shift into 1-4, but to get into 1st, I have to go hard left and up (just like you do to get into Reverse...except now that motion shifts into first). I've checked the rods, they're all hooked up correctly (I pinned the shifter in neutral and set them all). The shifter worked fine 4 months ago when I took it off the tranny (M-20). Something definitely isn't right, but I just don't know what. Any ideas?
Can you move the trannie shift levers with the links removed? Use a wrench on the flats of the output shaft to be sure they all move freely. You could have a trannie assembly problem, not a shifter problem.
Make sure you put a pin through the hole in the body of the shifter to line up the inside levers. Then adjust the rods to the shifting tabs on the tranny.

I had the same problem with a brand new Hurst shifter. I was rebuilding my 454 and figured I'd get a new shifter while I was at it.
Installed and it was a mother trying to shift into reverse. Then it would get stuck in reverse. Gave up and finally took it to a local hot rod shop. Mechanic said the new shifters are junk and cheaply made. I put my old competition plus back in and no problem since.
Only time my vette saw a shop, except for a front end alignment.

Yep, the tranny itself is all good. I did think of that one.

I did that as well. Plus, the weird thing is the shifter worked fine before I took it off, nothing changed and I put it back on...it doesn't work right. Rods were already adjusted, etc.
I took the rods off, pinned the shifter in neutral, put the rods back on and checked everything...it's 100% on there correctly (checked with AIM). The problem still remains. With the rods disconnect and I shift into a gear, should only the one lever of the shifter move? There's 3 levers, and it seems like only one should move based on which gear you select. However, the 2 levers closest to the driver's side (i.e. not the reverse one) move no matter what gear I try to select. Is it possible the shifter is just gummed up with old grease/grime and a good cleaning/greasing would solve the problem? Could I be trying to shift and the levers are sticking together, causing the shifter trying to shift into incorrect gears?

My friend Dave Herlinger at Corvette Repair (corvetterepair.org) has told me he has had nothing but problems with the current line of Hurst Shifters, maybe they moved production to China? I don't know but even the Competition Plus line has gone down in quality.
If you are confident of your skills I would dis-assemble the shifter , clean it completely and lube it up and see where that leaves you. I had similar problems with my Hurst , took it apart, cleaned it thoroughly and lubed it up and it worked like new when I got done. I couldnt beleive the muck and crap that was in there. I also found that it was very close, the handle/stick, to the console. Good Luck.
Peace,,,Moosie
I've never taken a shifter apart...how difficult is it? Is there a bunch of little pieces that are going to fly everywhere, or is it pretty straight forward?
I took mine apart and it was nasty inside. No wonder I was having shifting problems.
EDIT: After completely taking it apart, degreasing and cleaning all the parts and re-lubing, the shifter works like a champ. I also replaced the clips and nylon washer type things (on the rods). It made a big difference and my shifter actually works correctly too. Definitely recommend following the above directions if you're having shifting issues or just happen to have your tranny and/or shifter out of the car. I had mine out a while ago and hooked it all back up without cleaning it, just to find out it didn't work. I've learned my lesson...cut corners and you're going to end up making yourself more work in the end!
