Default Edelbrock carb experts-- help needed

I am pretty close to the end of my rope with this one. I have a Performer 600 cfm w/ electric choke, and I can't get it to behave. The idle is either really high or non-existent (the car dies). I thought I had the problem nailed down when I noticed that at the high-speed idle (not the fast idle that comes when the choke is on), there is gas slowly dripping down from the primaries into the venturi. I figured that there must not have been enough vacuum to hold the metering rod in position, so I went to a lighter step-up spring, but the problem didn't go away. I went back to the stock rod/jet combo so I could start from a known point, but by now I have had the idle speed screw and the idle mixture screws in and out so many times that I don't know where the zero point is.

Any sugestions on a trouble shooting technique? I just put on new TFS 23 deg heads, an RPM Air-Gap intake, and headers (to go with my XE268 cam) and I want to go out and drive the thing. Just to do it, I had the car our earlier and noticed that the car stumbles really badly, so the problem can't just be the idle mixture.

Thanks in advance.

Wow, same carb same problem. I also saw the drip from the primaries and thought I might not have it jetted correctly. Most of my problems have ended up being timing related, but I still run into issues when I floor it I sometimes have some hesitation. My idle is great now, but It was pretty rough for a while. I have never made any adjustments to my idle screw, just the A/F mixture screws. Good Luck and I will check back to see if anyone has any ideas for you as it may help me as well :smash:

The 600 CFM with electric choke is the #1406 I believe. It is set up with leaner jets, and a bit less aggressive metering rods than the #1405.
I had a very similar problem with my 1405 right out of the box. The float level and float drop was off, and it was causing the raw fule to drip thru the pri. side at a fast idle (just enough vacuum pull to syphon out too much fuel).
Hope this helps.

Shoptek-

I didn't even think to double check the floats, and I adjusted them when I first got the carb. Hopefully that does it. Warp70, I guess you'll be doing the same thing I will tomorrow. I finally bought a timing light, so the one thing I am pretty confident about is the timing.

Thanks to both of you.

Warp70-

Here's a useful tidbit I picked up on the Edelbrock website:

"Incorrect float settings can cause drip-flooding, hard turn stalling and flooding upon acceleration."

Sounds pretty familiar. Hope things work out for you. I'll keep checking this post in case there are some other ideas.

The float set dimension is 7/16". Make sure the needle valves seat ok. The idle adjust screws starting point is 1 1/2 turns out from full in position. The primary butterfly should expose only 030" to 040" of idle transfer slot.

Couple more tidbits. Double check your linkage. I believe the throw on the Edelbrock carb is more than a Holley or Q-Jet. So if you don't adjust your pedal and cable, you'll never get it full open.

Double check the tangs on the carb for any interference points with each other. The rear butterflies may not open 100% because of two possible tang stops misadjusted.

I had all the above stated problem with a 1406. I had to adjust the a/f, idle and floats right outa the box. But I learned this the hard way. It took me about a week of driving & adjusting to get it right. What really :mad me was the fact that I was also trying to get the timing correct. Impossible to do with an un-cooperative carb. Also I could never get the elec. choke to work quite right and the fast idle cam would spin around and all of a sudden, sitting in traffic, the idle jumps up from 700 to 1100!!

After about 6 months of screwing around with the Edelbrock, I bought a Holley 3310 750 and it worked great right outa the box. Now I'm looking at a Holley DP w/o the air horn and choke. For my use this would be ideal. I really don't need a choke, manual or electric.

Guys, I too just went through the same problems with the same set up!!! I talked to Edlebrock several times over the phone and tried everything, even a rebuild over the phone!!! Even boght a fuel pressure regulator (at thier request)!!! I went through 3 Edlebrock carbs before I finally had Summitt send me a Holley. Right out of the box, this cured my problems and I have noticed significant gains in power, not to mention a much smoother idle. Switch over and it will cure your problems!

Yep I agree. Switch it out for a Holley. I did the switch last night. I purchased a Sweet carb from Yellow 72 (Thanks again Mike)!! What a difference. :D :D
