I installed a new (old system new parts) Power Steering system in the 68. After getting a 4 wheel alignment. It pulls slightly to the left. Also it is hard to turn right (as if no power steering there) and easy to the left most of the way but not all the way. Do I just need to balance the power steering valve again? I've done it a couple of times already. Do I just need to do it again? Or is there something else I need to look at?
I Agree...I recently did a rebuild on my 79 that had a dead on alignment before I started. The valve was not balanced perfectly but it was suggested that I try it first then determine if I really needed to balance it. Car drifted right something fierce. Dialed it in (disconnected cylinder from frame to adjust) and it straightened it out beautifully. I never realized an improperly balanced valve could affect tracking so much...lesson learned.
Okay... spent a couple of hours on the steering yesterday and got her all fixed up. Balanced the control valve re: Jim Shea's paper. Glad I finally found some time to do this. I had to re-adjust the control valve 4 or 5 times but in the end it is now balanced and working properly. I took it for a test drive and backed into a parking stall and it was now effort at all to turn the steering wheel. What a nice change. Installed the new steering wheel and ready to go now. Here's a pic of the new steering wheel.
What am i missing? I followed the link and saw a line entitled "Control Valve Replace and Balance Instructions (Rev 18OC2006)" with a link below. That opens a word document with the following: Valve Balancing
With the assist cylinder disconnected from the frame, you can now start the engine and check the valve balance as described on both pages 9-34 and 9-35 under Valve Balancing
what and where pages 9-34 and 9-35 are is unknown to me
Got the balance done and what a difference it made. No more darting around. Only thing was I was a little nervous as I turned the adjusting nut. Not knowing how quickly it would move I did not want it to hit me. Just as I started to move it, two cats got in a fight (or a date, hard to tell) just outside the garage. Almost had to change my shorts.
what if your steering is tight in either direct and wont recenter the wheel after replacing the steering box & valve. Like mine is????
I have seen several rebuilt boxes that were tight. Not saying that is the problem, but it probably is. I would check a few things first. The valve for balance, the pump for pressure and the alignment for proper caster. If those are OK, then I would talk to the re-builder of the box.
