This time I have the following basic question to ask:
my Dart SHP is equipped with Milodon 30701 oil pan and Milodon 22005 dipstick. According to Milodon site this oil pan holds 5 quarts which is OK for my use.
What I would need to know if with this combo (SHP + 30701 + 22005) I can trust the max and min markings on the dipstick ie. if the "scale" of the dipstick is OK?
I had to make a dip stick for my morroso Road racing pan. It said 8 quarts. Because of all the baffles I had to cut a stock dip stick shorter. So I put in 8 quarts and without starting the motor I scribed a line at the high point. The filter also was a large one quart size so it actually held a total of 9 quarts when full.
A more correct way might be while the engine is on the stand is to fill the pan keeping track of how much oil you put in and fill it till it just touches the crank throw. Because when you fire the motor it will pump some up into the rest of the motor lowering the pan level

Thanks, mate. I'll keep an eye on the dipstick when I put the oil in to see where the level lands.
I'm showing my ignorance but what do you mean by "crank throw". The question on how much oil in a new oil pan has also eluded me for quite some time.
Thanks

If you look at a crank the rods are attached at the high point and the crank "Throws" are centered 180 degrees opposite.
The throws have to equal in weight to the rod and piston to balance an engine.
The crank throws should not be down in the oil of the oil pan. The spashing oil would rob HP which is refered to as "Windage" Pans often have scrapers and screens to keep oil off or strip off oil from the crank throws.
