What is the original distributor gear of a 82 made from?
I´m asking because want to install a hydr. roller cam from CompCams which is made from an austempered core and requires either a steel mellonized or composite distributor gear - according to information from CompCams.
For me this is still not the final answer for my question:
Are the cam gear compatible with the distributor gear?
Yes Sir: I did this same thing, just go to the local Chevy dealer, order the harden gear for the G.M. roller cam, drive pin out and change. If you decide to use the dist. in another car you don't have to change back is my understanding, from the G. M. counter men. I bought my last two at Superior chevy in Merriam, Ks.

GM p/n 10456413 melonized steel gear fits chevy dist w/ 0.491" shaft (C3 with either OE HEI or OE points). GM specifies that gear must be used with roller cams ... and it comes on HEI dist GM p/n 93440806.
FYI ... AFAIK, austempered is an iron core (not steel) ... if it ain't too late, I'd look into buying a genuine GM roller cam ... GM's are all steel & offers about a half-dozen sbc roller cam profiles.
