1979 corvette valve sten seals help??
Hi can anyone help me on valve stem seals, i have a rebuilt small block with the original o ring type, these dont seem to be doing much as it blows a bit of smoke on start up.
is there a upgrade parts that actually sealsand fits onto the guide itself??

Mine were shot when I bought the car a couple of years ago. I replaced mine with the mushroom seals from Napa. It was smoking pretty bad on startup, and using a lot of oil. The new seals made a huge improvement in it. It's a do it yourself job. Took me about 4 hours. If the search function works on here, there's plenty of info and pictures on replacing the seals. FWIW, if you have the original valve springs, you might consider replacing them while you have everything apart. They're inexpensive. I didn't replace mine, and one broke about 3 months after I replaced the seals, and I had to redo everything.

No, you don't remove the heads. Yes, you can use compressed air to hold the valves up. I pushed a piece of rope into each cylinder and then turned the crank over with a wrench until the piston pressed against the rope, holding the valve up. It worked good. Either way. Do a search on this forum under "valve seal replacement" and you'll find step by step instructions.
