Default Weight of a GM 400 block

Does anyone know the weight of a stock 2 bolt 509 GM 400 block? I just bought a Dart SHP block and it weighs 175 lbs. I was wondering how much more the SHP block weighs than the stock 400 block.

I have a stock 400 block but decided to go with the new SHP Dart block for my 406. It is a really well built piece.

I just read about those blocks, much better than even a perfect factory 400.
IDK the difference in weight, but it can't be enough to justify suspension mods if that's what you're thinking. If you have both of them, why not scale them?

Just being lazy I guess. I thought I could just Google it and find out. No such luck.

The Dart block is at the engine builder and the GM block is in my garage. I plan to sell the GM block and I wanted to know the weight for shipping purposes.

I assume that the GM block will be lighter and if it is 150lbs or less I can avoid freight charges.

Weight is about the same give or take a few pounds that wouldn't make any difference. If anything the OEM 400 block is heavier. The SHP block is 15 pounds lighter than the Dart Little M. and my Motown 400ci block weighs 190lbs

Thanks Motorhead.

I just assumed that since the SHP block has thicker walls and 4 bolt mains that it would be heavier than a stock block.

Motown advertised that their 4.125 bore block is 35 heavier than a stock block due to the heavier casting.

Still puts OEM block at 160lbs minimum, I would say OEM 400ci block weighs more than 160lbs. At least 175lbs maybe more

We have sold around 30 or so of the SHP blocks this year and so far no complaints from the customers, The cam tunnel area is a lot lighter then the 400 OEM blocks as the drain backs are in the center and there seems to be a lot more room in he cam tunnel area compared to a 400 OEM block.

And the cylinder bores, lifter bores and cam tunnel placement is sure a lot closer to blue print then the GM blocks.

Just go through your lifter bores and main line for proper clearance and the freeze plug holes need a little chamfer and also the Pipe plug holes need to taped a little deeper with a tapered pipe tap as Dart uses straight pipe taps when the blocks are machined.

Those blocks have been Darts top sellers

Good luck with your build

Carl
