Default Dropping in a 406?

Hi all,

I have a bit of a dilema. I currently have an L82 in a 77 which produces 300hp (pretty much standard, performer intake, holley 650cfm, headers/straight through exhaust).

I am tempted to buy a 406. Spec is listed below. The question is am I making the right move? Also I have recently fitted a new flywheel, clutch, etc. I thought these would transfer straight over but I have seen on one occasion the mention of a new flywheel being required? Is this because of balancing or bolt pattern/size? Will bellhousing swap straight over?

Is there anything else I need to take into account or will need to change?

Just after some advise really - I am supposed to be going to look at it in the morning.

Also does the projected power output sound realistic or totally blown out of proportion?

Any help/advise you can give would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Lester

P.S. I am in the UK so these dont come up too often, and if I were concidering a build or building up my L82 I would have to take into account exchange rate, shipping and 22% tax upon entering the country.

Spec below:

Small block 400 seasoned block cleaned, measured and trued, bored 30thou with deck plates, decked for alignment and final compression height.

Bottom end has been aligned, caps trued and main cap girdle fitted with ARP studs and windage tray.

NEW Eagle steel crank and 'H' beam steel 5.7" rods with clevite 77 bearings.>7,000 rpm

NEW Hi volume oil pump and HD drive shaft.

NEW Pro Street Damper and ally pulley, whole assembly balanced, balance sheets available.

NEW Finned Alloy Deep Sump.

NEW Speed Pro Hypereutetic pistons with Total Seal Rings, 10 to 1 compression.

NEW Edlebrock R.P.M. Cam and hydraulic lifters running in New clevite 77 bearings, roller chain set and alloy cover. 1500>6500 power band.

NEW Edlebrock R.P.M. Ally heads CNC machined with stainless swirl polished big valves. ARP head bolts Felpro Head gaskets.

NEW Crane roller rockers and H.D. pushrods.

Ally Medium rise manifold with Carter/Edlebrock 750cfm carb complete with jet kit.

Unilite distributor and Leads.

NEW water pump.

Pair of Corvette headers.

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS.

At least 450-75hp and loads of torque.

How much? Also, do they all the receipts for proof of purchase? 450 sounds pretty easy for this motor depending on the cam specs. I would think an 850 cfm carb would be needed.

I've seen similar combo's advertise 450hp and up, fairly easy to do with 406 cubes. The flywheel will need to be changed to an external balanced wheel, unless the rotating assembly was designed as internally balanced, which is not commonly offered in low cost builds.

I went 406 years back, and love the power, but have had a long hard road due to parts breakage.learning curves, etc....The cost of gas now makes me wonder if I should have stuck with the 350, as I now get about 10-12 mpg's......

Just a few things to consider.

Price tranfers into USD at $5300.
He has receipts and balance sheets. I enquired about who did balancing/machining work, which has been done by one of the most experienced we get in the UK. Balance sheet for bottom end provided.
Engine is supplied with top end not yet fitted.
Thanks for the input guys.

Any more suggestions/info guys? I am going to have a look in a couple of hours.

Cheers,
Lester

Thanks for the advise, but didnt buy it.... Was very tempting but for a number of reasons decided against it. Mainly finances.
Guess the L82 will be getting a new top end later in the year
