What is safe timing for breaking in a new short block, total rebuild, with new cam and top end. Initial (with vacuum disconnected & plugged) or vacuum connected?
since it has to be ran to high rpms anyway. set it to TDC for cranking and once its fired and at 2500 rpms use your dialback light to set the timing to the recommended degree for that speed
36* if i am not mistaking.
The springs don't limit the timing advance, they control the rate of advance. The bushing under the curve plate is what limits the advance amount.
I set the base timing about 6 degrees on my 454, then put the smallest bushing (red) in the distributor to get the mechanical advance of 28, so I get 34 total. I am using the light silver springs to get the advance as quickly as possible.
