From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
CS144 Alternator installed
..and alternating
Pretty easy to do, drops right in, I did run another bigger wire to the starter lug though. Seems to be working fine, I noticed it dropped my idle revs 100RPM just spinning it
And the reason for the new alternator is these two power pigs, dual 13 inch Spal fans draw about 30 amps each
And here is my old chrome one which is pretty much brand new and has been upgraded with 94 amp internals, it's for sale

It is an easy swap, no kit but I bought an SI to CS alternator connector from Napa and put in a bigger wire to the starter terminal from the alternator.
The rad top is either part of the BeCool rad itself or was added when a custom shop fabricated the fan brackets for me
Look on ebay. They have them. Buy the adapter with it. Should be a straight forward install if you have the adapter. There are two types of adpaters...with idiot light or without.
Could you tell me what the belt part number is for your alternator as I have a CS144 and I've gone to tall valve covers and now it mounts in the same position as yours.
I used a cs144 out of a '96 Monte Carlo from Autozone; looks to be the same alternator. I also redid the wiring from the alternator to the starter and also to the firewall, replacing the gauge 10 with a gauge 8 wire.
I do think there was something about needing to add a resistor of some sort in the plug wiring to prevent premature alternator failure, which I did; can't remember exactly what I did though.
I think you could use an underdrive pulley with your new alternator.
Maybe it wouldn't drop your idle so much, and you could also have a small horsepower gain.
Here's an aluminum pulley I made for my CS130. The alternator is 20% underdrived and it still works great with my 2 SPAL fans :

What would be a good source to buy a CS-144 on the Net - overseas delivery, you see? I don't find any references at Jegs or Summit for these.
I bought my CS-144 for my 78 L-82 last December and it was a breeze install with the conversion wire for a SI to CS alternator which National Quick Start (See link below) has-They have anything you could possiblly need as well as many different amperage altenators of all types-Very reasonable for brand new units!

No resistor required if you have a generator light as well the guage. No gen light-resistor required.
Check the link below for anything you need to know about stock/high output/ superhigh output amperage alternators:
Do you have to "clock" the CS-144? If so, what is entailed?
Call National Quick Start at the link provided above and they will give you a CS-144 exactly for your year, clocked, right pulley everything-They are very helpful and will "customize" your alternator according to exactly what you need-no one size fits all-They have great prices as well-I replaced my 80 amp SI altenator with a "base' 140 amp CS-144 for around $179, brand new-I had to go to home depot to get a different grade 8 bolt for the belt adjuster-that's it. Everything else switched right over.Hope that helps!!
