Timing and tuning
350 auto, with Q-Jet...about 275 Hp...I have read some pretty complicated posts on setting the timing...but wanted to get a simple explanation if possible.
How to set the timing?

Its easy if you have a dial-back timing light. This is oversimplified but the basics are:
Plug the vacuum advance line on the distributor. Set your base timing to 12 degrees with the car idle set low. Then run the car to around 2500 rpm, and look for 36 degrees. This would be your base timing plus the centrifugal advance kicking in. You may need to change to weaker springs on the weights, in order to get full centrifugal advance by 2500 rpm. Then hook up the vacuum advance and check the timing. You should have 52 degrees timing "ALL IN" by 2500 rpm. The vacuum advance adds about 16 degrees. Don't go over 52 degrees total timing. To adjust the carburetor, turn the mixture screws in all the way but not too tight. You can do damage. Then back the screws out 1 and 1/2 turns. Hook a vacuum gauge up and adjust each screw until you get the highest steady vacuum. Try to keep the screws adjusted an equal amount in or out.
