Do NOT mess with the cables when you are cranking the car over. You'll get a spark that'll melt your brains from the huge draw. Clean both sides, likely you aren't getting a good connection.
Just plain WATER works great for cleaning corrosion from battery terminals.
If you can avoid it...Don't ground to the battery..I use to do it all the time..Untill I was jump starting my buddies car and I reached over to make sure he had a good ground on the battery..And the thing let go...Sounded like a shot gun ...We both got covered in battery acid...We then had to wash the cars....We were lucky no one got hurt...Good luck
For what it's worth... I tightened the side post cable ends already. They are clean & tight.
It's either a loose cable to ground, or a loose cable at the starter, or a bad/loose ignition switch.
I witnessed the first episode... in my driveway. Tightened the positive cable at the battery and it started right up. Thought the problem was solved... obviously not.
