Default Temp gauge problem

I have a '72 350 and recently noticed that the temperature gauge doesn't read higher than 120 degrees. I replaced the sending unit and continue to get the same problem. Next, I grabbed my volt/ohm meter and checked the gauge with a 5k ohm potentiometer. I discovered that the gauge worked properly for simulated temps between 210 - 250 degrees, but continued to stay in the area of 120 degrees for simulated temps between 100 - 210. I have cleaned the gauge's contacts -- the problem remains. Is this a common problem with older gauges? Do I need a new gauge or is this something that I can fix by myself? Do I need to go to a restoration facility? Please help.

Is the resistor on the back of the gauge good and reading around 90 ohms?

Default Looking for resistor

Not sure. On the back of the gauge is a small wire-wrapped, rectangular strip. Is that the resistor? Thanks in advance for any help. This thing really has me frustrated.
