Considering buying a 82 corvette not special edition. Could probably buy between 3000-4000. Any problems with fuel injection? How do they compare to 80-81. Thanks for your help. Needs paint and interior work.
Love my 82. I've put some money into it..interior, paint, suspension and steering, radiator, etc. Probably never get it all out but love the looks and comments I get from people. Had a corvette repair specialist tune it last summer and look at the low idle. Talked about the pros and cons of the cfi. After looking at mine he said he thought the tb's looked in pretty good shape. There is a 'wear' aspect to them but after plugs/wires/timing and cleaning the tb's seems to run fine. Always starts right up.....but then it always has.
I don't do a lot of the work on mine, at least not engine stuff because I don't want to tackle anything too big, but some folks comment on liking the 80 because it is a carb and no ecm/computer. Mine has been very good. Only thing I need to fix now is a very slow oil leak around the lower engine/transmission. Am guessing a combination of rear seal and oil pan. Probably get that checked out this summer.
Pros...beautiful automobile...one of the best looking C3's. Collectors Edition especially. First year of modern fuel injection, last C3.
Cons...first year of modern fuel injection. Limited power potential. After this many years possibly not too many techs understand it and how to keep it running at peak performance.
I'm personally not fond of the '81 computer controlled carbureted cars. Potential for lots of headaches with crude (by today's standards) electronics and carburetor. Pre-computer controlled engines are simpler. Automotive technology advancements left both the '82 cross-ram efi and '81 computer controlled carbs behind pretty quickly.
None of that says these aren't nice cars. Like all model years they have their own particular sets of problems and good points.
do you want a racer something you can make go fast=1980 do you want the last year for a stick shift=1981 do you want a nice driver that gets good mpg =1982
Probably the 80. I guess I could get a 81 or 82 and enjoy them the way they are and always change motors and make them faster if need be. My hobby is changing motors and rebuilding them the they way I like. I just seem to like that body style for now. I've had several corvettes over the years. Always enjoyed the projects. Never really wanted to buy one completely fixed up.
