I have a 1972 corvette with a steeroids rack and pinion set up. I removed the column to install a new bearing and bearing adapter however I must have collapsed the steering column in the process as it is now short and there is little engagement of the u joint onto the steering shaft. How do I extend the steering column without damaging my new bearings and without taking the column out of the car.
You can't re-extend it in the car, practically. remove the seat and re-remove the column, it's really a 30 min job, once you've done it once, remember to disconnect the batt before you start. Hold the column in a table vice by the fire wall plate and install the clamp end from the rag joint onto the end of the column, hook a steel cable through the holes and use a come along to pull it out to the correct length slowly. That's it.
You can get a longer double D shaft. Check the local bone yard the GM trucks use the double D shaft. You can cut it to the size you need. If you want knew Speedway Motors sells the shaft.

All that's gonna do is put a band-aid on the problem. Fix it right.
