Default Hoods LT1? Big Block?

I have a 69 that I have just installed a Fast Burn 385 crate motor in and my stock small block hood is not going to work.

Are the LT1 and Big Block hoods the same and how much additional hood clearance do they give? I don't want to use my L88 hood if I don't have to.

Also do the later C3 hoods fit on the earlier (68 to 72) cars.

Thanks,

Eric.

I don't think the LT1/BB hood will give you the added clearance where you need it. I was looking at one to see if it would when I was at Noth Texas Corvettes last weekend and the only differance that I could see is where the front is raised up on the LT1/BB hoods. The "scoop" seemed to taper back to the same as my small block hood on my 71. My friend had a 75 and I dont think his hood would fit on my car either. The hood prop rod is a lot different as far as where it connect to the hood (that could be an easy fix though) but you would have to remove all the wiper door stuff and the vent grill, also his hood flares up at the rear edges where the trim pieces are on our front quarter panels. His car dosen't have these trim pieces. Take a look at a 73 on up and you'll see what I am talking about. Why dosent you Fast burn fit? I installed a ZZ4 with a Q-jet and the stock air cleaner and it fit just fine. Is the fast burn manifold taller??

They are the same hoods. The big block gets fancy chrome trim in the false vents. You will get about 1.5" more clearance above the center of the carb compared to a standard small block hood. A LT1 manifold is about 1.5" taller than the cast iron lowrise spread bore manifold. The 383 motor is still a factory SB block so it should fit as long as you use nothing more than a reasonable highrise manifold.

Does anyone else have any information regarding these hood questions? I just about have everything buttoned up on the engine swap and I plan on firing up the motor tomorow. After a trip to the chassis dyno for a final tune, I would like to start the body work.

Also the reason that I asked about the later C3 hoods on a 69 is that it seems that I have seen some of them with a higher rise middle section.

Thansks, Eric.

I have seen a pic of a '73+ hood installed on a '68-'72 car. They had cut the hood to keep the wiper door stuff from the '68-'72 car. I've been thinking about trying this and have been keeping an eye out for a cheap hood. The other advantage to these hoods is the cowl induction.

Do you know if the later C3 hoods will fit the 69 by removing the 69's wiper door? The cowl hood is the look that I want, but the only aftermarket ones that I have found are 4.5 inches high and that is too tall for me.

Call Vanacors and ask them. They have a full range of factory and custom designs.

Yes, 73-79 has the med. rise hood which is a good choice if you don't want the hi rise L-88 hood.
